In the everyday environment around us, various things exist while constantly and gradually changing and intertwining. Under such circumstances, Shimada believes that a role of design is for sincerely reexamining the relationships between things, organizing them, and creating an optimum condition while envisioning the future. He always keeps “enhancing the appeal of an environment and finding the value in its weak points” in mind when designing building façades, interiors, furniture, and landscapes without prejudice. His emphasis is on creation of experiences and behaviors that are unique to the location.
私たちを取り巻く日常環境は、様々な物事が日々刻々と少しずつ変化し、絡み合いながら存在している。そのような状況におけるデザインの役割とは、物事の関係性を真摯に見つめ直し、整理し、未来を見据えながら最適な状態をつくり出すことであると考えている。「環境の魅力は増幅させ、弱点には価値を見出すこと」を常に考えながら、建築ファサードからインテリアや家具、ランドスケープまでを分け隔てなくデザインし、その場所でしか出来ない体験や振る舞いをつくりだすことを心がけている。
